How to Write an Obituary

The purpose of an obituary is to announce and notify the community of someone's passing. It is a summary of the lost loved one’s life and accomplishments, as well as a place to share memories. It can include information about their funeral, burial, and memorial service. The elements included in an obituary are normally:


  • Announcing the death

    • Full name

    • Age

    • Place of birth

    • Date of death

    • Place of death

  • Date, time, and place of the service

    • Funeral or memorial details

  • Biographical information/ summary of life

    • Memorable moments and accomplishments

    • Hobbies, education, or contributions to the community.

  • List of close friends and family

  • Acknowledgments and donations

  • Pictures

    • Recognizable headshot

Normally the obituary is shared in the local newspaper and on social media.

Here is an example/outline:

[NAME], a long-time resident of the Vail Valley, died [DATE] surrounded by her close family. She was born in Boston and was the only daughter of [PARENT] and [PARENT]. After receiving her BA from [UNIVERSITY], she married her high school sweetheart, [SPOUSE]. She was a caring mother and active community member.

Her work included planning Pink Vail and volunteering at the Go Pro Games. [NAME] was also passionate about music, volunteering for Vail Valley Foundation at Gerald R Ford Amphitheater for over 15 years.

She leaves behind her husband and her daughter, [CHILD]. Funeral services will be held at [LOCATION] on [DATE] at [TIME]. The [LAST NAME] family requests memorial gifts in [NAME]’s honor for the city’s local musicians program.
