How to Close a PO Box

Many have to close their loved one’s mailboxes after their passing. Of course, this shouldn’t be the main priority and doesn’t have to be because many PO Boxes are rented for 3, 6, or 12 months at a time. When you close the mailbox it’s suggested that you forward all of their mail to the executor of the estate, in order to receive all bills. In order to close the mailbox you will most likely either need the death certificate or a copy of the probate order. You can close a USPS PO Box by:

  1. If the PO Box is managed online, you can close it by visiting PO Boxes Online at http://www.usps.com/manage/po-boxes.htm.

  2. You also have the option to visit the Post Office™ where your PO Box is located to close your box.

Another big suggestion is to put the deceased on the do not contact list using this link: https://www.ims-dm.com/cgi/ddnc.php. It can also be helpful to cancel and unsubscribe from any subscriptions like magazines or newspapers, this will vary from organization to organization.
